So a HS friend of mine passed away this last Monday, and so yesterday a few friends and I went to his funeral on the other side of the water. It was a nice funeral, if you can call them nice. Lots of loved ones there, very supportive people, and many kind words were said about him. He will be missed.
The drive there was pretty crazy. We were late getting out of town and we got lost, so we missed the first part of the service (it was open-casket, apparently. I'm sad I missed seeing him one last time, but at the same time, I think I'm ok with not seeing him...).
When we discovered that we were late we decided to just start driving to see his funeral. So I cut across two lanes of traffic to make my exit, frightening the person I accidentally cut off so much they looked like they'd seen a ghost. It played much like an action movie, actually, and I felt extremely bad ass. Afterward, everyone in the car let out a scared, "....Whoa."
We found the cemetery, went to a gas station about 15 mins away, used the bathroom, and then came back to a car that wouldn't turn on because the key wouldn't turn. We sat there, frustrated for like five minutes, and I decided that pushing the car forward might do something, for some reason. I'm not sure what inspired me to say such a thing.
While exchanging seats with my friend, he pushed the car forward angrily, and I got in the driver's seat. I popped the key in and turned the ignition. It worked. I was shocked.
We sped out of there, went 55 on a 35 road, and caught the hearse caravan on its way there. The service was lovely. Saw them finishing up laying him to rest, and then we left.
We decided it would be best to do something completely random and fun, as that's what our friend would have done, so we went to the Super Mall. It was fun, we saw lots of things and had a lot of laughs.
Then we went randomly to Seattle, where I bought some cologne that I'm going to send overseas to Australia. Then we went to the Macy's building, up 6 stories, to the bathroom, down 6 stories, bought chocolate, to a smoke shop, then to the ferry. My friend (the one who pushed the car) was driving, and accidentally turned down the wrong way of a one way road. There were people panicking on the sidewalk, but one lady looked at us and told us that it was ok, we were alright.
From then, we went to the ferry, joked about turning down the wrong way, and noted how much fun the day had been, aside from the obvious sad parts. It was something I had needed for quite a while, something to get me out of my funk. I feel relieved. Ready for whatever's next.
Even though I still haven't accepted that my friend is gone forever (I don't think I ever will), I feel like I've changed a little bit, thanks to him. I feel more positive, more willing to live life to the fullest. I want my life to be full of more randomness, more spontaneity, and fun days with people I love and care about.
